Focusing on Solar Energy Solutions and Community Efforts

Kansas City, Mo. (August 19, 2014) – The Kansas City Chiefs announced today that the club has signed a long-term partnership agreement with Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) which will make the local utility company the club’s Official Renewable Energy Supplier.

“We are extremely excited to announce this long-term partnership with our local utility provider, KCP&L,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “We have spent a significant amount of time examining our sustainability efforts over the past few years and we know that with KCP&L’s expertise and commitment to renewable energy in Kansas City, they will be able to assist us in making Arrowhead Stadium and The University of Kansas Hospital Training Complex even more environmentally friendly.”

As part of the partnership, both organizations have put an emphasis on renewable energy solutions. Part of that focus included installing three, 25-kilowatt solar arrays that will produce approximately 29,000 kWh of renewable energy each year. That’s enough to power the cooking of 1,500,000 brats a year.

A total of 308 solar panels were installed at the Chiefs facilities, including 82 on top of the west end of the Scout Investments Club Level at Arrowhead Stadium, 108 on top of The University of Kansas Hospital Training Complex and 108 on the grounds surrounding the club’s practice facility. These solar panels will generate enough solar power to help offset 66 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year. That is equivalent to the average electrical consumption of 8.2 homes for one year.

“KCP&L is excited to join the Kansas City Chiefs on this renewable energy and community-focused partnership,” KCP&L President and CEO, Terry Bassham said. “We are familiar with the sustainability initiatives that the Chiefs have been working on and are proud to join forces with our hometown team in order to take their efforts to the next level to benefit their fans and our customers.”

As part of the collaborative effort between the two organizations, KCP&L and the Chiefs will continue working on new and exciting energy initiatives. As part of the partnership, KCP&L will work with the Chiefs organization to find innovative ways to reduce their energy consumption, use energy more efficiently and greatly increase the amount of electricity the Chiefs get from renewable energy sources. In addition, KCP&L will install five solar-powered mobile device charging stations within the concourses of Arrowhead Stadium that will allow fans to charge their devices while enjoying Chiefs games.

Additionally, KCP&L and the Chiefs will also offer educational information through the first-ever KCP&L Community MVP Program and other Chiefs-related community appearances. Through these tools, Chiefs fans can learn how to monitor the production of solar energy, how solar energy benefits the Kansas City Chiefs facilities and ways that they can apply renewable energy efforts at home.
